Should You Reface Or Replace Your Cabinets?

Before you replace your cabinets, you should consider whether they can be refaced. Refacing can save you lots of money, and take much less time during the renovation process. But not every situation is right for refacing.

Here are some questions to ask to help you decide whether to reface or replace your cabinets.

  • Are the cabinet boxes and face frames structurally sound?
  • Is the existing layout workable?
  • Your cabinets are dated and show wear, or you simply want to change the color and door style?

If you answered “yes” to all the above, then refacing is probably an excellent choice.

If you want to change the layout or have cabinets that are coming apart structurally, then the best option is to replace them. Homestead Cabinet Design offers both refacing and new custom cabinets.

How Much Does Refacing Cost?

Refacing can cost anywhere between 40% to 70% of the price of new cabinets. If there are cabinet modifications, such as modifying the layout for a taller and wider fridge (most older kitchens do not have room for the new larger fridges), or making space for a microwave over the range, there will be more cost involved.  Other options that add to the cost are upgrading to new drawer boxes with soft-close slides, or roll-out trays instead of shelves in base cabinets. You may also want to add crown molding, or a new decorative wood hood.  Other options are adding a trash pullout, other organizer pull-outs, or cutlery drawer.

The average cost for refacing is between $5000 and $9,000 depending on the size of the kitchen as well as the options you select.

How Much Does it Cost to Replace Cabinets?

Custom cabinets built with 3/4 plywood boxes, solid-wood doors and drawer boxes,  and using soft-close hinges and drawer slides can cost between $15,000 and $25,000 for an average kitchen.

Here are some average costs based on HomeAdvisor:

  • Stock cabinets = $100 – $300 per linear foot installed
  • Semi-Custom Cabinets = $150 – $650 per linear foot installed
  • Custom Cabinets = $500 – $1,200 per linear foot installed

Some things to consider:

  • Box store cabinets are most times made with particle board and are stapled together. Drawer boxes are also particle board and stapled together, and do not hold up to wear and tear.
  • Homestead Cabinet Design uses all 3/4 plywood boxes and solid-wood doors and drawers, and design possibilities are endless.
  • Homestead Cabinet Design also offers design and installation service if you’d like to purchase a lower price cabinet from your supplier.

What Materials Are Used for Refacing?

When it comes to refacing, there are number of options:

  • Laminates – usually Plastic, vinyl, or RTF (Rigid Thermalfoil)
  • Wood veneers
  • Solid wood facing.
