Can 1950’s cabinets be salvaged?

I had the privilege of helping Mike and Janice from Greenfield, MA restore this kitchen without replacing the cabinets.

This kitchen had some cabinets replaced about 20 years ago with builder grade cabinets, but the upper cabinets and valance over the sink were still original built-in style from the 50’s.

The doors on the wall cabinets were probably replaced at the same time that the lower cabinets were replaced.

Refacing Cabinets with Solid Wood

Because of all the wear and tear on cabinets of this age, I recommended refacing with solid wood.

In this case I used Solid birch painted to match BM White Dove color.

Replacing Worn Drawer Boxes

These molded plastic drawer boxes were cracking and in need of replacement. I upgraded these to a beautiful maple dovetail drawer box.

Blum undermount slides are really impressive – The smooth in and out motion and the soft-close feature will give any older kitchen the feel of a brand new cabinet!

Cabinet refacing is a really good option if you prefer not tear out your cabinets. Granted, some cabinets should be replaced if damaged or falling apart! But the beauty of these older cabinets is that many were built in place as single units and made of solid wood!

You can restore these cabinets and keep that timeless look, bringing them back to life again! You should be able to get another 20 years out them if you give them the care they deserve!
